ありとあらゆるものには魂が宿るとよく言われますが、特別な信仰心があるわけでもない僕はなんの疑いもなくごく自然とその事を受け入れて生活しています。神様や妖怪は、存在するかもしれないし、しないかもしれない、絶対にわからないということこそが自然と受け入れることができる理由なのではないかと僕は考えています。僕の実家には床の間があります。そこには大きな水瓶があり、四季折々の花が生けてあるのですが、不思議と生けられた花は土に生えているときよりも魅力的に感じます。それを眺めながら「この花にも魂があるのだろうなぁ」と考えたとき、ふと「いや、この花は根っこから切られてもう死んでいるのじゃないだろうか。でも死んでいるようにも見えないし、凄く魅力的に見える」と疑問に思い、自問自答してなんとなく仮説を立てました。それは、この花は死んでもいるし生きてもいるということです。いる。いない。という対極にある考えが同時に存在しているからこそ人々の心を惹きつけるのではないでしょうか。僕は自身の制作において、この対極にある概念が同時に存在するときにできる魅力を擬人化という手法で表現したいと思っています。つくも神という100年経った道具は魂が宿り手足が生え動きだすという伝説があります。古くから現在まで神様を人の形で現したり、対象を人に近づけることで親近感や愛着を感じさせることは、幅広く取り入れられている表現方法です。　僕は、今回の作品をこのつくも神的な感性を基底にして制作しています。端的に言うと花を生けるための器を擬人化することで僕の表現が鑑賞者に対して広く伝わることを願っています。 It is often said that there is always something like a spirit or a soul in everything. I live my everyday life, believing in that idea without any doubt even though I am not a particularly religious person. And it seems to me that the reason why I can accept such idea so naturally is because there is absolutely no knowing whether or not things like gods or ghosts really exist. There is a “Tokonoma” ( a Japanese style alcove) in my house. And there stands a big water jar always filled with seasonal flowers. I always find these flowers much more attractive in the jar, where they are separated from its surrounding nature, rather than within the nature. One day, as I was looking at flowers in the jar, I thought to myself “there must be some kind of spirits in these flowers too”. But soon I also wondered “Or not. These might already be dead with all the roots cut. Though they don’t seem dead but rather very beautiful.” Then I came up with one theory: These flowers are dead and alive at the same time. It is such co-existing of two very opposite concepts that “something is there” and “nothing is there” that makes these flowers even more attractive to us. In my works, I try to express such attractiveness, created when these bipolar concepts co-exist, by personifying it. In Japan, it has long been believed that a wide variety of daily tools, after having been used for a hundred years, finally come to have a spirit and become a god called Tsukumogami. They are even said to gain arms and legs and start walking around by themselves like a human being. This is also one kind of personification; the way to make people feel more intimate with, affectionate and more connected to certain objects by making them closer to human beings or giving gods human forms in art works. Behind this piece of work is this concept of Tsukumogami, tools coming to have a sprit. A vase may be merely a tool for arranging flowers, but this time I gave it a human form to turn it into something that people can feel familiar or even intimate with. And I hope whoever sees this work gets that feeling.

植物は決まった時期に花を咲かせ、季節の移り変わりを教えてくれる。はるかな昔から変わることなく淡々と生のサイクルを繰り返している。それは不思議で、どこか安心もする、そんな植物の姿を是非ご高覧下さい。

今回のテーマは“鉄道”です。本年4月、当ギャラリーから南に300Mの所に鉄道博物館ができました。連日大勢の人が訪れていますが、その賑わいを眺めていてフッと感じた事がありました。鉄道や道路を良く“大動脈”と表現する事があります。この大動脈とは本来人体の中に流れる血管ですが、全身を流れる血管のうち最も大きなものであることから、地理分野で比喩的に「大動脈」と表現することがあります。大地を人体と見立てるというのはこの事に限らず良くありますが、よくよく考えれば、人間の作り出すものは、その殆どが生命体（人間以外も含＝バイオミメティクス）の部分的模倣のようにも感じます。大動脈となす鉄道、そこから全国隅々まで延びる鉄道はあたかも人体全体の血管のようにも感じます。それは車を中心とした高速道路を始めとする道路網も然りであり、あたかも動脈・静脈のようでもあります。鉄道と言うワード、線路もそうです、電車もそうです、様々なコンテンツがあります。“4展”Artist・4名がどの角度からこのテーマに切り込むか？こうご期待ください。

独り夜道を歩く。町は静かだ。誰の姿も見えないが、建物の窓からは灯りがこぼれる。この膨大な数の灯りの向こう側には、誰かの生活があり、人生があるようだ。独り夜道を歩く。冷たく、殺風景だった町は一転、ひどく賑やかで騒々しいものになった。いないようでいる、いるようでいない、ゆらゆらとうつろいゆく気配を感じたとき、独り夜道を歩く私は、独りではなくなった。
